How long does a visitor take to become a customer?
By Devendra Variya, co-founder of Virling. Published 2026-10-26.
Time to pay is the number of days between a customer's first visit and their first payment. Measure it per channel, because a channel that pays slowly can look like it is failing when it is only taking longer.
How to measure it
- Record the date of each visitor's first visit
- Record the date of their first payment
- Subtract, then take the median for each channel
Use the median, not the average. One customer who pays after three months pulls an average far from what a normal customer does.
What the number tells you
- Same day: the visitor already knew what they wanted. Make the path to checkout short
- A few days: they compared options. Make pricing and proof easy to find
- Weeks: they need reminding. Email and retargeting start to matter
Why it changes how you read channels
If you judge a channel after seven days and it takes twenty to pay, you will cut a channel that works. Compare the median time to pay with the date range you are looking at before you decide.
Why it affects the lookback window
The lookback window is how far back a payment can look for a visit to credit. If most customers pay within 30 days, a 30-day window is enough. If your median is longer, widen it, or late payments lose their source. See the model and lookback window.
Seeing it per channel
Virling shows how long each channel takes to get paid, next to its revenue per visitor. It needs payments linked to visits, as in tracking Stripe revenue by traffic source.
Frequently asked questions
What is time to pay?
The number of days between a customer's first visit and their first payment.
Should I use the average or the median?
The median. A few very slow customers distort the average and hide what a typical customer does.
What lookback window should I use?
One longer than most of your customers take to pay. If the median is 12 days, 30 days is usually enough. Widen it if you see many payments with no source.
