What is revenue per visitor, and how to work it out

By Devendra Variya, co-founder of Virling. Published 2026-10-26.

Revenue per visitor (RPV) is the money you earned divided by the number of people who visited. If 2,000 visitors led to $1,000 in payments, your revenue per visitor is $0.50.

The formula

revenue per visitor = revenue / unique visitors

Use the same date range for both numbers, and count each person once. Page views and sessions inflate the bottom half and make every channel look worse.

A worked example

Say you got paid $1,200 this month. Three channels sent traffic:

  • Reddit: 2,000 visitors, $100 revenue, $0.05 per visitor
  • Organic search: 900 visitors, $450 revenue, $0.50 per visitor
  • An AI assistant: 60 visitors, $300 revenue, $5.00 per visitor

Reddit is the loudest channel and the weakest one. The assistant sends the fewest people and pays the most per head. These numbers are made up to show the method; yours will differ.

Why it beats conversion rate

Conversion rate tells you how many visitors paid. It ignores how much. Revenue per visitor folds price, plan mix and conversion into one number, so a channel that converts less often but sells the annual plan can still win.

What counts as a good number

There is no universal benchmark, because it depends on your price. Compare channels with each other and with your site average instead. A channel at twice the average deserves more of your time. A channel at a fifth of the average deserves a better landing page or less attention.

Early numbers are noisy

With 20 visitors from a channel, one payment swings the ratio wildly. Wait until a channel has a few hundred visitors, or look at a longer range, before you act on it.

How to get the number without a spreadsheet

You need each payment tied to the visit that came before it. Our guide on finding which channel pays shows the five steps. Virling shows revenue per visitor next to every channel, source and landing page, from Stripe, Dodo Payments, Polar or LemonSqueezy.

Frequently asked questions

What is revenue per visitor?

Revenue divided by unique visitors for the same period. If 2,000 visitors led to $1,000, revenue per visitor is $0.50.

Is revenue per visitor the same as average order value?

No. Average order value divides revenue by the number of orders. Revenue per visitor divides it by everyone who visited, including people who never paid.

Why use unique visitors and not page views?

A person who reads five pages counts once as a visitor but five times as page views. Page views would shrink the number and distort the comparison between channels.
