Is AI search traffic worth anything? How to measure it
By Devendra Variya, co-founder of Virling. Published 2026-10-26.
It can be, but you have to measure it per visitor, not per visit count. AI assistants send far fewer people than search, so the total looks small. What matters is how much each of those visitors pays.
Why the total misleads
A channel with 40 visitors will never top a channel with 4,000 on a traffic graph. If those 40 pay at five times the rate, they are worth more per head. You only see that with revenue next to traffic. See what revenue per visitor is.
Step 1: count the visits you can see
When someone clicks a link inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Gemini, the visit usually arrives with that assistant's site as the referrer. Your analytics should group those referrers into one AI channel. Virling does this and lists each assistant by name.
Step 2: know what you cannot see
Some answers are read and never clicked, and some assistants strip the referrer, so those visits land as Direct. Treat the AI number as a floor, not a total.
Step 3: join the visits to payments
Pass the visitor ID into checkout so each payment is tied to the visit before it. Without that step the AI channel shows traffic and no revenue, which is the most common reason it looks worthless. The steps are in tracking Stripe revenue by traffic source.
Step 4: compare revenue per visitor
Put the AI channel next to search, social and email. If it sits above your site average, find out which pages the assistants send people to and make them better.
Step 5: check whether assistants name you
Visits are only one signal. Whether an assistant recommends you when asked is another. Virling's AI answers tracking asks assistants the questions your customers ask and records whether you are named; see AI answers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I see visitors from ChatGPT and Perplexity?
Look for their sites in your referrers. Group them into one AI channel and list each assistant, which Virling does automatically.
Why does my AI traffic show no revenue?
Usually because payments are not linked to visits. Pass the visitor ID into checkout so each payment can be tied to the visit before it.
Can I see AI visits that arrive with no referrer?
Not directly. Those visits land as Direct, so the AI channel is a minimum, not the full count.
