Why Shopify orders show up as Direct, and how to fix it

By Devendra Variya, co-founder of Virling. Published 2026-11-01.

TL;DR: An order shows as Direct when nothing about the visit before it says where the buyer came from: no referrer, no UTM tag, no click ID. That is usually a tracking gap, not people typing your address. Most of it can be fixed with tagged links and a visitor ID stored on the order.

The usual causes

CauseHow to spot itFix
Untagged email and SMS linksDirect orders jump on the day a campaign goes out. Email and SMS apps rarely pass a referrerAdd UTM tags to every campaign link, or check that your email tool adds them
In-app browsersBuyers from Instagram, TikTok or Facebook bios and stories. The app's browser often sends no referrerTag bio and story links. Use analytics that recognises in-app browsers
Links in chats, PDFs and appsWhatsApp, Slack and Discord shares, QR codes and PDFs arrive with nothing attachedTag the links you share, and use short links you can tell apart
Landing pages on another domainYour blog, link-in-bio page or quiz lives elsewhere and links to the store without tagsTag every link into the store, or track both domains as one site
Long buying cyclesThe buyer found you through an ad or a post, then came back days later from a bookmarkRead a last non-direct or first-touch view, not only the last click
Orders with no web visitDraft orders, POS, staff-created orders and subscription renewals. Check the order's sales channel in ShopifyFilter reports to Online Store orders
AI assistantsCustomers say they found you in ChatGPT, but the order says Direct. Some assistants tag links, many do not, and copied links carry nothingTrack AI referrers where they exist and ask how buyers heard about you
Declined consentDirect share is higher in regions where your banner asks for consentExpected. Count these as unattributed rather than Direct

How to see the real source of each order

  1. Tag every link you control with utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. The rules are in which UTM parameters to use.
  2. Give each visitor an ID when they land, and remember their first source.
  3. Store that ID on the cart. Shopify copies cart attributes onto the order, so every order carries the visitor who placed it.
  4. Match each order to that visitor's visits and credit the last real source before the purchase, not the final bookmark.

Virling does steps 2 to 4 with one script and a short theme snippet; see Shopify revenue attribution. It reads orders with a token that can only read orders, counts refunds and Shopify Subscriptions renewals, and shows revenue per visitor for each channel, including AI assistants.

Frequently asked questions

What does Direct mean for a Shopify order?

It means the analytics found no referrer, UTM tag or click ID on the visit before the order. It often hides email, social apps, chat links and earlier visits rather than people typing your address.

Why does Facebook or Instagram traffic show as Direct?

Links opened inside the Facebook or Instagram app often arrive without a referrer. Tag ad and bio links with UTM parameters so the source survives.

How do I reduce Direct orders in Shopify?

Tag every campaign link, track your blog or landing pages together with the store, store a visitor ID on the cart, and read a last non-direct view instead of the last click.

Can I see which channel each Shopify order came from?

Yes, if each order carries a visitor ID that can be matched to that visitor's visits. Virling stores the ID as a cart attribute, which Shopify copies onto the order.

What attribution model does Shopify use?

Shopify's marketing reports let you choose a model, and the default is last non-direct click: an order goes to the last visit that came from a real source, not a bookmark. Orders where no visit had a source still show as Direct.
